The MIDAS Training sub-committee is pleased to announce that MIDAS has organised an Analog IC Design training course, targeted at 3rd and 4th year undergraduates. The course will be delivered by Dr. Kaveh Hosseini and its primary objective is to give students a practical insight into Analog IC design within a short amount of time.

The training will take place in Lecture Room L2, Electrical Engineering Department, University College Cork

IEEE Keynote Talk: The Internet of Everything is Here

Speaker: Professor Thomas H. Lee, Stanford University, CA, USA

Location: Room 326, Engineering Building, UCD Belfield Campus, Dublin 4.

Abstract: Wireless continues to evolve along a clear historical trajectory. Marconi's station-to-station spark telegraphy gave way to station-to-people broadcasting, and then to today's ubiquitous people-to-people cellular communications. Each new age became more important and more valuable than the previous age by enlarging the circle of conversants. Because the three ages have covered all combinations of "stations" and "people," one might be tempted to argue that we have essentially reached the end of history. However, history never ends. There will be a Fourth Age, one which networks inanimate objects with each other and with us. It is, in fact, unfolding quietly now, soon to become an obvious trend within a year, based on one possible reading of the tealeaves. Overcoming the many challenges of the coming Fourth Age of Wireless to create the Internet of Everything represents a huge opportunity whose dimensions are scarcely discernible from our perspective in the present. Although the details of that future may be uncertain, it is certain that history is not done.

Speaker's Bio: Professor Thomas Lee received his S.B., S.M. and Sc.D. degrees from MIT, where his thesis work in the late 1980s culminated in the world's first CMOS radio. He's been at Stanford since 1994, and recently completed a tour of duty as Director of the Microsystems Technology Office of DARPA. He served for a decade as an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer of the Solid-State Circuits Society and the Microwave Society. He holds 57 U.S. patents and co-authored 5 books. He cofounded Matrix Semiconductor (acquired by Sandisk in 2006) and is the founder of ZeroG Wireless. He is the 2011 recipient of the Ho-Am Prize in Engineering (informally known as "the Korean Nobel") for his work on RF CMOS.
