Programme overview

This CPD module will develop a deep understanding of MOS devices and fundamental analog circuits. It will be delivered using a blend of online video lectures, design simulation labs, tutorials, and daily online support. The module involves lab-based home assignments and has a successful completion rate of over 90%, which is very high by industry standards. Successful participants will receive a registered digital credential in a certificate format which can be shared on LinkedIn and other social media platforms. The module employs a 100% continuous assessment approach. Therefore it is recommended that participants allow for a time commitment in the region of 6 to 8 hours per week which includes course attendance, study and lab assignments. Lectures and Lab tutorials will take place on Tuesdays 4 - 7 pm.

Learning outcomes

Develop a fundamental understanding of CMOS devices
Analyse, simulate & design CMOS analog building blocks & amplifier circuits

Evaluate analog layout structures and matching techniques
Gain intuitive know-how with weekly design lab & simulation exercises

Acquire hands-on design skills underpinned with a solid theoretical basis

Who is the course for?

The Analog IC Design CPD module is ideal for junior analog/mixed-signal design engineers who wish to achieve a more rapid skills and career trajectory. However, the module is also ideal for more experienced engineers in other roles, for example digital system design engineers, verification engineers, physical design engineers, test engineers, or engineers who simply want to acquire a deeper understanding of MOS devices & circuits.

The module is at a postgraduate level so intending applicants will ideally hold a 4-year degree in electronic engineering or related discipline. However, applicants with suitable and relevant industry experience can also be accommodated.

Schedule

Consists of a weekly 2-hour live online lecture plus 1-hour lab tutorial for 6 weeks plus assignments.

Weeks 1-3: MOS device fundamentals & basic building blocks
Weeks 4-6: Analysis and design of single stage amplifiers
Weeks 7-8: Analysis & design of differential amplifiers and OTAs
Weeks 9-10: Analysis & design of op-amp circuits & applications
Weeks 11-12: Noise analysis, analog IC layout & matching techniques

Trainer Profile

Ken Deevy has over 25 years of experience as a senior lecturer and researcher in higher education. He was previously a senior design engineer at Analog Devices, where he spent over 10 years involved in the design and development of a wide variety of mixed signal circuits, including high-resolution and high-speed data converters, precision comparators, analogue signal conditioning circuits, voltage references and oscillator circuits. Ken holds 4 patents and co-awards in the field of microelectronics. While in higher education he introduced a number of Analog and Mixed Signal IC design courses onto the undergraduate and postgraduate programs at Waterford Institute of Technology.
